Souk Ha Pish Pishim in Yaffa is filled with little random shops with no names filled with amazing tchochkes. Walking through them is a like treasure hunt. There used to be stores like these all over Israel in city centers, but no more. Thank G-d there’s still Yaffa souk.
The store owner couldn’t understand why I had a camera, why I was interested in his shop, or what I wanted. So I wasn’t able to get as many picture of things as I would have liked.
This particular shop specializes in old metal somewhat thrashed and occasionally crusty objects (much like the owner). The entire shop was a pile of junk just waiting to be sorted through (hmmm… ok, I won’t go there).
Because of the owners suspicious nature (and despite my explanation – in Hebrew no less, ok, rotten broken Hebrew no less) I wasn’t able to fish as much as I would like, but I did find a few things.
An old milk jug is crying out for a country farmhouse table and some fresh cut flowers.
These pestles and mortars could either be decoration, or cleaned up and used in a kitchen. Their handles were especially heavy, which is good when you’re making pesto – you don’t have to use your arm as much to grind up the ingredients.
As I was unceremoniously ushered out of his shop I took a quick shot of one last ware. Beautiful old candlestick holders are just waiting for their next shabbos candles.
