Metanya, in the heart of Jaffa souk, is one of those places where you step in and feel instantly at home. The guy working there was so nice and personable (and we of course forgot to take his name) that you could imagine going there just to hang out with him a bit. On top of all that, the store is a feast for the eyes.
Forget Ikea – Metanya and places like it are the shops you should be going to for colorful design.
The owner has an incredible eye. I haven’t the slightest clue where she finds her wares, but whatever she’s doing she’s got it right. The style of the store is the best of the 50’s and 60’s ultramodern.
My favorite pieces was the tableware and accessories. Bold patterns and colors that scream to be noticed. Check out the glass box at the bottom edge of the photo below.
Remember The Brady Bunch? I love it. I wouldn’t put all of these pieces together, mind you. I would my favorites and encorporate them into a more updated space. That side table could look brilliant next to a sleek damask sofa.
There was a strong emphasis on kitsch mixed in with the more serious pieces, showing the owners sense of humor – always a good thing. Metanya was filled from ceiling to floor with interesting tchochkes. Highly recommended, if only just to say hi to the great guy working there.
