Are we Ego or Eco-centric? Who doesn’t love to buy new things? We all need new stuff (“need” sometimes translating to “want”) at some point or another. How often do we think about where our new purchase came from and where will be in 100 or 200 years from now. Is it biodegradable? Is it made of materials that are replenishable?
Ecocentric is one such interior design/gift store created by Oliver Heath, designer, writer and UK TV presenter. Mr Heath is known for awards he has won for Interior design and more recently as a media spokesperson for several ecological action programs. Aside from selling amazing and ecological products, Oliver Heath also runs Heath Design, an interior design and eco consultancy firm as well as Blustin Heath Design which he runs with another designer, Nikki Blustin. Their work is breathtaking to say the least as well as sustainable, which is super impressive, but enough about that let’s go shopping! (You’ll be glad to know that they do ship to Israel, so you can buy all the goodies you see here).
The following are some of my favorite pieces:
The lampshade above caught my eye. It’s cut out of recycled paper using an ancient Chinese cutting technique (The paper is treated with fire retardant liquid – sigh of relief). This is a fascinating art form that Chinese women use to record the joy and surprises of their lives and experiences. The lamp is specifically designed for use with an energy saving bulb (40W Max). There are a few different designs on the site, but I liked the repitition in this one.
Here’s another lampshade made from 100% natural wool felt. It seems Mr Heath and I share a common love for cut outs.
I loved this “Heritage” style wallpaper.
This “Housewife” wallpaper is cheeky and impressively hand printed.
Their cushions inspired me. The first, a handmade cushion made from organic cotton and hemp.
and the other cushions that I really liked were these recycled shirt and tie cushions which are pretty crafty:
There are also reclaimed seatbelt cushions, which I find lovely.
They have really great items for kids as well. All kinds of igloos and teepees made of cardboard. I particularly liked these cardboard chairs which you can decorate yourself. They fold up so you can take them anywhere.
They sell all sorts of recycled glass vases, lanterns, glasses and jugs. Here’s my favourite carafe:
The prices vary. Some of the things are a little pricey, but others are not. There are also items on sale.
Thanks for coming shopping with me. I always enjoy it, and it adds an extra little fun to it when you know you’re buying something that helps take care of the world.
