This past weekend was the Houses From Within tour in Tel Aviv. I had an amazing time and saw some incredible apartments. I missed a lot of places I would have liked to make it to – but that’s why they do this annually. What you don’t get this year, there’s a good chance will be open next year. Ziva Hasson opened her home and her pottery studio. As you all know I have a real thing for pottery, I’m starting off with Ziva.
I absolutely fell in love with her work and her apartment.
But first, her work…
She isn’t afraid to saturate the ceramic with color – and I love that. The red pieces above are the exact color I want for dishes – actually – I want a set of 6 of the red, and a set of 6 in the blue below so I could mix and match.
I love both colors and I think they would look positively brilliant together in a mix and match set.
Her prices are also extremely reasonable for handmade pottery. The studio is in the ground floor of 35 Shlomo Hamelech.
These adorable figurines (and the sheep you can see in the gallery below) are made by Orna, a friend of Ziva, and is available in her shop.
After gawking at her pottery I got the pleasure of gawking at her apartment. What an amazing place. A huge one bedroom with an office and double balcony. What I liked the most about the interior was the seamless mix of modern and antique pieces.
That’s the interior designer, Michal Shaish, leaning against the kitchen counter. If you’re wondering where the fridge is – it’s in some of the drawers on the back wall.
I know I’m a dork – but I just thought this was so neat. It’s such a cleaner look.
Even still, I’m too American – I want to open a door and see everything at once. I would go nuts going through drawer after drawer to find everything.
I could make such fantastic things in this kitchen – but I would probably break my back doing it. The owner is quite tall and has the counter tops higher than average. I’m quite short – so that does me no favors.
I do think that having an oven that low is a bit weird.
The bedroom was simple – and while I would like a walk in closet considering how much space they had – they only had 2 dinky Chinese closets on either side of the double doors to the room.
The bathroom is simple enough – and long, very long.
The bedroom / bathroom did have an element of surprise – that is the shower you see in the background and that glass door to the shower is open. I guess that could be handy for waking your partner up when they are sleeping in – just take the shower and soak them in bed.
I did like that they made a real attempt at a well made bed. I think it’s harder here because no one sells king pillows for the back pillows (or king size pillowcases for that matter) and many beds don’t have a box spring so they are quite low. However, I like the attempt made here. At least there was some effort.
I took over 70 photos of this apartment – so I’ll put the gallery below and you’ll have to wait until Wednesday for the next installment of this post.

Wow Shira,
Great job on the photos. I missed out on all of the “Houses from Within” sites, there were sooo many people out at this event, the lines were huge and my friend had a bad sciatica and did not want to go up stairs or wait on lines…
I can’t wait to see what you saw!
🙂

Ziva, Kol Hakavod!
You did a great job at your house. It is beautiful and inspiring!!!
I’m sure your apartment gave people new ideas.
I love the new pottery too!!
Our love to you all!
Thanks so much for this! I’m Ziva’s cousin, live in Boulder, CO, so while I’ve seen her fabulous pottery before, never got to see this new, lovely apartment!
