achievements of Israel and one man in particular, the furniture designer Ron Arad.

which being based in Italy.

It was during the 1980s that design in general took a radical turn. Ron Arad and his fellow avant-garde contemporaries including Philippe Starck and Tom Dixon, attempted to deconstruct and poke fun at the rigid ideology of the Bauhaus. Borrowing from the classical designs of history, they turned them into biomorphic forms and often labelled their creations with ludicrous names such as Arad’s Big Easy Red chair and the Empty chair.

Furniture was becoming Art, much more so than ever before and Ron Arad’s daring designs in this movement won him international recognition and a flurry of commissions from large manufacturers.

Arad’s The Rover Chair (1981) is considered to be one of his most famous works. The concept for this piece of furniture came shortly after he first moved to the United Kingdom. Whilst working in Hamsptead in London and getting weary of working for other people, Arad wandered off one sunny afternoon from his office, to a local scrapyard. There he picked out two abandoned car seats, some metal frames and through various experiments, fitted the parts together to make armchairs. He would never work under anyone else again.

Thanking you in advance, Elizabeth
Hi Elizabeth,
I don’t know exactly who would carry it – but I would check with Tollmans’s, Habitat and Exclusiv – these are the three places that import higher end designer goods here.
