“Many of my works begin as vessels, as works that wrap space in clay.
The thin layer of clay contains the interior space and at the same
time defines the outside. It creates a space that is suspended between
containment and emptiness”.
Marcelle Klein
I fell in love with Marcelle Klein’s work earlier this year at the Ceramics Biennale at the Eretz Israel Museum in Tel Aviv. The smooth white porcelain surfaces and organic shapes intrigued me to no end.
As I clicked my way through the website I was pleasantly suprised with a collection of sculptural work that is devoted to form as opposed to function. This artists work is a reprieve from the ordinary, mass produced “artsy” ceramics too often seen these days. This is the one from the show, it may look familiar.

i love her organic shapes. i just want to reach out and cup them in my hands.
Thanks so much for introducing me to this amazing ceramicist and her soul-touching work. Well, it speaks to MY soul – there’s something about the way she makes container-type shapes look already-filled that makes me think, “Self-contained. At one with oneself. Peace. Contentment.”
Ah – I see it now. Self-fulfilled! You can’t add anything to them, but then, you can’t take anything away, either.
Having said that, I’d love to have some of her jugs and bowls to use in my house. Their curves and shine convey the same feeling to me. Wow!
