Store review: Ginger in Neve Tzedek, Tel Aviv
I’ve been wanting to review Ginger for weeks – but every time I was in Neve Tsedek in Tel Aviv I forgot my camera. This place is such a feast for the eyes – I just wanted to close the curtains, kick everyone out and move in.
Vibrant. Color. Everywhere. Seriously.

Online Product Review: ABC Carpet Color Reform
ABC Carpet & Home in NYC sent us a notice about their new rug concept called Color Reform.
It’s a brilliant idea and the carpets are stunning. They are taking old worn out carpets, neutralizing the color and dyeing them with an over-saturated color, like the fuchsia above.

For the love of roses
Au nom de la rose in Montmartre. Yes, I was in Paris for the first time and I just could not pass up this gem of a store.
Store Review: The Mysterious Ubico Studio
Ubico Studio can be found in an alley in the south of Tel Aviv, in Florentine. An alley which carries the scent of wood shavings and glue. No, I didn’t come back high.
Why is Ubico Studio mysterious, you may be asking yourselves? Well, it’s the name, you see. Ori Ben-Zvi, the founder, was willing to answer all my questions, but one: What is the meaning of “Ubico”? “It’s a personal secret” said Ori, making it that much more mysterious.
Ellia Nattel, a recent graduate from H.I.T (Holon Institute of Technology) works together with Ori. Also a lecturer at H.I.T., Ori teaches a class on Environment and Society as part of the Industrial Design Faculty. Ubico studio’s work deals with the romance of recycled furniture and it is handmade as opposed to readymade. Take, for example this shelf unit:
It’s made of drawers, right?
Wrong!
Store Review: Aron Design in Budapest
I happened to be in the city during Budapest Design Week – October 2nd -11th which ran for the sixth consecutive year.
It consisted of design fairs, exhibitions, open studios and programs for children. This year’s theme focused on artists’ creativity and innovations. As well as drawing the public closer to the Hungarian and international design world.
I managed to visit the Aron Design Store which turns into a kind of ‘ museum’ for the week.
Designer review: Shine Home
Shine is the creative outlet for Susan Hornbeak Ortiz, the co-owner and designer. The style of Shine is very Southern Califiornia slick. Like Palm Springs during the rat pack years when Courrèges was king.
And the furniture reminds me a lot of movies from that era as well – with a twist. The fabric of the piece above with the traditional fabric tacked edges is very mid-60’s – but the cut out from the top of the back is something different. An Asian influence in shape.

Store Review: Wynne Alex in San Francisco
Went I went into Wynne Alex they were getting ready for a sale, so very likely they have absolutely none of the products you can see below. Yes, I know, convenient of me wasn’t it? Well, you can see their style if nothing else. And the pictures are pretty…
And we all like pretty pictures.

Celebrate the earth with Viva Terra
There are many companies these days that are devoted entirely to preserving the earths resources, Viva Terra is one to mention. All of their products focus on environmental themes from recycling to ecologically friendly. I absolutely loved a few things from their site, especially this rug made from discarded measureing tapes.
Store Review: Zinc Details in San Francisco
I went into Zinc Details on a day I didn’t bring my camera. But I needed pictures of this insanely cool shop. I absolutely had to cover it on Tchochkes. And yes, I do get somewhat theatrical when I get passionate about a place, but this is design – it’s allowed. I’m not like this when writing about Ku antennas on the fuselage of an aircraft, I can assure you (yes, I have written about Ku antennas – you’d be amazed at what I know).
But I digress.
Zinc Details was filled with amazing mid-century modern furniture. The kind crying out for attention. For photographing. For filling a San Francisco loft with hardwood floors and exposed cement ceilings.
And me without my camera. In case you’re wondering – no I didn’t get back there. What I did was convince Casey, the amazing guy working there, to take some pictures for me. And he did. Love him!

Shopping review: Califa, Ramat Ha Sharon
I’ve got eyes in Israel…
My friend Tammy from T in Tel Aviv gave me a heads up about this artist and collector that operates out of Ramat Ha Sharon under the name of Califa. Known for the arts and creative types, Ramat Ha Sharon, just outside of Tel Aviv in Israel is one of my favorite places to seek out the unique.
