Home Tour (I think): Yaakov Sasson’s rooftop gallery

Yaakov Sasson is best described as an eccentric. I talked with him a bit, but I couldn’t quite tell whether he lived here or if this was his work space or gallery. According to Houses From Within “The roof top on Alfasi is not a house but really an institution.” Which doesn’t really answer my question either. I think you’ll see what I’m saying though when you check out his place.

Home tour: The architect flat of Miki Ben Gan

Miki Ben Gan is an architect with a really stunning garden apartment in an incredible location of Tel Aviv. His home had a line of people a kilometer long just waiting to get in.

Miki shares his flat with his wife and baby girl. The place is approximately 75 meters total (750 sq. feet) and like most architects houses – he’s made the absolute most of the space he has. Unlike most architects homes his space is especially warm. White was not used in abundance here, even though the space was so small – and texture was a big player in design.

Home Tour: Yuval and Orna Shaul’s apartment, part 2

We saw their wonderful living room, kitchen and bathroom on Monday’s post and today we’re checking out the bedrooms and clothing shop. They have three children, all of whom have a larger bedroom than their parents, which I thought was very nice of them. It was obvious that they want the kids to enjoy their space. Each room was special and filled with art.

Each kids room had similar elements. An amazing antique armoire, a simple bed and a desk. Oh – and of course, the art. They were all filled with art.

Home Tour: Vanity creates a nice place to live – part 1

I took a lot pictures of this house, so the second half of this post will be on Wednesday. This post includes the entry, living room, kitchen and bathroom – the bedrooms and shop will come later. This was the largest apartment I saw from Houses From Within.
Owned by Yuval Shaul, an artist,  and Orna Shaul, a vintage clothing shop owner, this apartment was the least ‘designed’ house of the day (and consequently it was one of my favorites.)
There’s a lived in look to this flat. An immediate warmth. When you’re in a gorgeous designed home you’re in awe, but you may not necessarily want to live there. There’s typically a cold element, whether one likes it or not, simply because the design didn’t come from the owner. Here you feel the personality of the owners and it’s very welcoming.

The apartment is filled with art and antiques. It’s comfortable, family-friendly – a place where you feel instantly at home.

Home tour: Dropping in on Michal “Bialik”

On the first day of Houses From Within I went to lunch at the very cool Cafe Bialik and sat at the bar. I’m bored so I start chatting with a guy sitting a few stools down. He was a real character, asking me if I was religious and such (I guess I kind of looked it from the way I was dressed) and I found him thoroughly entertaining. We eventually discussed Tchochkes and family and kids (what can I say? I’m chatty.)
That day I ordered the BLT and it was really good.
I liked the BLT so much the next day I went back for another one (because they made the bacon crispy – which for some reason is really hard to find in Israel.) This time I sat at a table.
Looking around the restaurant I thought to myself, ‘I bet the owner has a fabulous apartment. There are just too many really cool elements of design in this place.’ So I saw the owner and asked her if I could take pictures of her flat.

Turns out that she already knew about me. The guy I was chatting with the previous day was her brother and he had mentioned me.  So she said yes, and walked me to her flat after I finished my meal. I love it when that happens.

Home tour & store review: The eco-friendly house / shop

The eco-friendly home was definitely one of the more interesting places I went to from Houses From Within. Located in Bialik Square (over by Bialik House), the eco-friendly apartment has a store in the front, an office, bedroom and kitchen. The backyard is used to make compost and other earth friendly things.

I have to say, some of the apartment seemed like it was taking ‘earth friendly’ to mean the same as ‘grungy’ – and they are not the same.

Home tour: Guy Velikson, architect living in Tel Aviv

You can always tell an architects home – stark, clean and they make the absolute most of the space given. Their houses are also typically small because architects rarely earn what they deserve. Guy Velikson has a tiny apartment in a fantastic location in north Tel Aviv that he shares with his wife and son.

The ultra-clean lines scream architects house – but there were a ton of hidden gems in this wonderful flat.

Home tour: Soho loft style

mv-leather-couch
This is the second half of a double feature.  Yesterday we saw Michele Varian’s store and today we see her home.  Michele and her musician husband Brad Roberts of the band “Crash Test Dummies”, live in a real downtown SOHO Loft.  I have seen various lofts, but this one is my favorite.  I want to know where she is getting that wall paper?  I can’t believe that I am saying this, but “I love that wallpaper”… I could study this photo for hours.

Home Tour: Ziva Hasson part 2

I mentioned on Monday that I took a lot of photos of Tel Aviv potter Ziva Hasson’s amazing apartment. As such I couldn’t stick them all in one post. Well, this is part 2 – the front and back balconies, guest bathroom, and office / guest room.

The slate gray tile of the apartment is continued straight out onto the front patio. Notice the size of the tile is quite large. Having the tile continue outside gives a flow to the apartment and turns the front patio into an outside room.

Home tour: Ziva Hasson – Ceramic artist in Tel Aviv

This past weekend was the Houses From Within tour in Tel Aviv. I had an amazing time and saw some incredible apartments. I missed a lot of places I would have liked to make it to – but that’s why they do this annually. What you don’t get this year, there’s a good chance will be open next year. Ziva Hasson opened her home and her pottery studio. As you all know I have a real thing for pottery, I’m starting off with Ziva.
