Bright ideas from Usona

Coat Trees by Usona
I found  the link to Usona while thumbing through a favorite shelter magazine and was pleasantly surprised to find some whimsical, colorful and useful ideas on their website.  I love to see a company utilize brights in their line up of designer home furnishings and accessories.  More often than not home product is blurred by the beige brigade.  I can see integrating the coat trees shown above in a group but I am pretty sure I would get upset if someone actually hung a coat on one of them.

I just love the name of this website, it makes me think of the Walt Disney movie “Anastasia” when Micky cuts a magical broom in half and it can’t stop reproducing itself.  thechairfactory.com offers chair after wonderful chair to choose from.  We all know that “You can’t survive on chair alone”, so the site also has many other colorful furniture categories.  The bright plastic theme is emerging throughout the furniture world as a fresh Spring trend.

The wonder of garden herbs

Herbs by Wikkipedia
Everything about herbs including their vibrant green color is uplifting.  Just looking at them makes me want to get outside and start planting.  March 20th was the official beginning of Spring and as if someone turned on the sunshine, all the early Spring flowers popped out of their winter holes.  This signals the start of the growing season and one of the first plants to arrive at nurseries far and wide are herbs.  The earliest of all is rosemary.  I picked up a few plants this weekend just to get an early start.  You have to buy the herbs as they come into the market or you risk the chance of missing out.  This has happened to me more then once with fennel, one of the most delicate of garden herbs.

Color Tip of the Week: Integrating texture and color

Glass Tile
There are many different ways to accent a room aside form the wall color.  Adding texture with items like glass tile, natural stained woods in funky colors that accent the grain or patterned linoleum are all ways to make a splash.  Every room calls for a unique solution so put on your thinking cap and go to town.  The glass tiles shown above would not have the same effect in a muted color, see the tiles below.  Color plays an important role when paired with texture.  The deeper the color, the richer the texture and that is that.

Organic bedding by West Elm

Bedding by West Elm
Kudos for this new line of organic bedding offered by West Elm, the American home furnishings retailer.  I usually love their designs and hate their quality, but this line of sheets and bed covers sets itself apart from the norm.  Organic home furnishings is the latest craze and now it can be found in mainstream stores, I featured towels from Pottery Barn  while back.  I love the “pin-tuck” duvet shown above.

Color Tip of the Week: A warm home

A house can be made a home by adding colors from the warm side of the color chart.  Yellows, reds, and oranges all reside in this category.  If you are not fond of the idea of painting an entire wall in one of these vibrant tones then accessories can do the job just as well.  Adding a red pillow or two to a green room can pump up  the rooms volume in a heart beat.  How about re-upholstering a chair in an orange velvet for some zing?

Collecting canisters

Canisters from Great Bay
Canisters are one of those items that make collecting fun and challenging.  Many times sets are made to be broken, as is the case with this decorative and useful item.  Usually found in sets of three, these containers are little stories in themselves.  But because of their nature as separate items with detachable lids quite often canisters sets do not survive the test of time.  The canister itself can be found in interesting shapes and sizes while the subject depicted on the exterior creates another dimension where stories can be told.
