Last month when I was walking around Jaffa, I discovered The New Gallery after my curiosity led me through a beautiful old archway and then a covered alley. The gallery was right in front of me as I came out the other side, and the classic mid-20th century modern furniture behind their big glass display wall told me I would want to see what else was inside. This place is really on top of their game—elegant arrangements of perfect vintage pieces, accessories, original contemporary art, and thoughtfully selected books and magazines. The building’s domes and arches, typical of old Jaffa, are a real nice compliment to its contents.
They are currently displaying works by some very interesting artists. A line of one of a kind sculptural lamps by designer Yaakov Kaufman, which are just wonderful. He uses simple raw materials: aluminum sheets and rods, light bulbs, black electrical cables, and sometimes wood. Each lamp seems to have a personality. There are also mixed-media grid compositions by Simcha Shpeizer, a.k.a. “Shpuz”, and some really interesting urban-themed photography pieces by Noy-me.
Even though I could not afford to buy anything from The New Gallery, I really enjoyed looking around there and was truly inspired by the place. They offer art and design consultations in their studio, which specializes in creating “balanced and harmonious spaces by combining architecture, furniture and art.” I also learned from their email list that they run an interior design mini-course at the gallery.
The gallery was founded by curator Hadas Hermesh and Sami Shalom, an interior architecture and multi-discipline designer. All in all, I’d say this place is worth a visit. They’re quite welcoming and it seems like a good place to watch and learn!
